Public Noodling Area

Coober Pedy’s free public fossicking ground on Jeweller’s Shop Road is a place to try hand “noodling” for opal. Stay within the designated area, follow signs and confirm current boundaries with the Visitor Information Centre. Nearby claims and the fenced Faye’s Underground Home are not part of the public noodling area.

Try hand noodling by day, or bring a UV blacklight at night to look for fluorescence. Night noodling here means the designated Jeweller’s Shop Road public area in town—not the surrounding opal fields. Stay within its boundaries, carry an ordinary white-light torch as well, and keep children close. The official warnings for the opal fields still apply outside this designated area: do not wander onto the fields at night or enter a pegged claim without permission.

There are shaded picnic tables and interpretive signage on site. You can noodle by hand for free; official guidance distinguishes this from using picks, shovels or other digging devices, which require the appropriate permit. Bring a hat, water and sturdy shoes.
